OTC anti-itch lotion with 1% hydrocortisone; its drug role differs from salicylic-acid scale softeners and plain moisturizers.

Fit signals

comparing OTC hydrocortisone label limits, distinguishing anti-itch treatment from keratolytic products

Potential constraints

treating as an unrestricted long-term psoriasis maintenance product, ignoring age and seven-day stop-use directions

Key tradeoff: Hydrocortisone targets itch/inflammatory symptoms, while psoriasis control may require a broader condition-specific plan.

This is a factual fit-and-tradeoff summary, not a product recommendation. Formula, device and brand claims remain manufacturer claims unless the cited source is explicitly regulatory or independent testing.

A different product job from a scale softener

Cortizone-10 Anti-Itch Lotion for Psoriasis contains 1% hydrocortisone. DailyMed classifies its purpose as anti-itch and describes temporary relief of itching and discomfort associated with minor skin irritations and rashes.

That makes this materially different from salicylic-acid psoriasis creams. Salicylic acid is used as a scale-directed keratolytic; hydrocortisone is a topical corticosteroid used for temporary anti-inflammatory/anti-itch relief. Comparing their percentages would therefore be meaningless.

Drug Facts boundaries matter

The current Drug Facts say adults and children age 2 years and older may apply the lotion to the affected area no more than three to four times daily. For children under 2, the label says to ask a doctor. It also directs users to stop and seek medical advice if the condition worsens, symptoms last more than seven days, or symptoms clear and return within a few days.

Those limits are central to understanding the product. “Maximum strength” marketing should never be interpreted as permission for unrestricted long-term psoriasis management.

How to compare it

Compare active class, intended symptom role, age directions, use duration, vehicle and body site before comparing brand claims. Persistent or substantial psoriasis can require psoriasis-specific prescription topical, phototherapy or systemic treatment rather than repeated OTC hydrocortisone use.

For that escalation framework, see Psoriasis.

Safety first

What should make you slow down?

This is an OTC hydrocortisone anti-itch medicine. Follow current Drug Facts: adults and children 2+ may apply up to 3–4 times daily; under 2 ask a doctor; stop and seek advice if symptoms worsen, persist beyond seven days, or recur soon after clearing.
